Dan Carol, Candidate for Chair
Greetings Oregon Democrats,
I am running for chair because I think I am the right person to help DPO be an energetic force for mounting an early, County/grassroots-driven challenge to Gordon Smith. Failing to do so puts everything else at risk in 2008.
.
I know I am unknown to many. Yet I think my experience working closely with Ron Brown and state parties at the national DNC for 3 years, working closely on Lane County strategy with Val Hoyle, my winning track record in and outside of Oregon, and my 11 years in Oregon makes me the best choice.
Having worked as the research director for the Packwood special election that put Gordon Smith on the defensive and Ron Wyden in the Senate, I understand what it takes to win.
I also understand how our debates often fracture around passionate questions -- urban v rural, base or persuadable voters, issues v infrastructure etc. These debates are contentious and horrible. And I love them. :)
Seriously, for all of these questions we need to find a way to do both. If I will err on one side of any debate, however, it will be for how the Party helps candidates win and create new fans of DPO.
As chair, I won’t make promises about resources to counties until I have raised the money to make these promises real. I will, however, bring my voice and experience to bear to ensure that County Chairs and their operations are not overrun by out-of-state, 25 year old organizers in the 2008 presidential.
