Faith Community Events:

1) Lecture by Dr. Baher Butti: "The Psychological Consequences of War in Iraq."

Dr. Butti is an accomplished writer and speaker on a wide range of topics, including women's mental health, conflict resolution, human rights, Iraqi history and politics, and the social development of the Iraqi community. He has been interviewed by the BBC, NPR and The New Yorker, among others. He was appointed to the National Committee for Media by the Iraqi Prime Minister in 2004 and is a member of the Iraqi Union of Writers. He organized the first courses ever developed for women NGOs on women's mental health and nonviolent conflict resolution in 2004-2006. As a member of one of the Christian communities of Iraq, he understands first-hand the discrimination of minorities in Iraq. He came to the U.S. in 2007 from the displaced Iraqi community in Jordan where his family still lives.

The event is free; donations suggested ($5-10).

 

2) Wheels of Justice Tour: Eyewitnesses speak on the Occupation of Iraq and Palestine.

Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh (Christian Palestinian-American, author of "Sharing the Land of Canaan: Human Rights and the Israeli-Palestinian Struggle" and media activist) and Mike Miles (Catholic worker, founder of a center for the study of nonviolence, community and sustainable living, and human rights observer) will speak. During the open house refreshments will be served and Palestinian handmade olive-branch baskets and organic fair-trade olive oil will be offered for sale by Lutherans for Justice in the Holy Land. Wheels of Justice focuses on nonviolent education, justice and human rights and has visited more than a thousand college campuses, churches and communities. The event is free; donations to WofJ are welcome.

 

3) You Must Be the Change: A Workshop on Nonviolence. 

Inspired by a quote from Gandhi, Rev. Charles Busch, founder of Peace Village, and Cathey Busch, actor and educator, explore the foundation of peace to be found within each person, define nonviolence and emphasize its call to action. Faith Caucus Mission Statement

The mission of the Faith Caucus of the Democratic Party of Oregon is to demonstrate and act upon our strong moral and ethical values of the common good, economic and social justice, equality, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, fairness, stewardship, peace and hope. Within this framework we welcome all Democrats of faith, work to elect Democratic candidates, build and sustain relationships in all communities of faith, and influence the Democratic Party platform, candidates, elected officials, and public policy.
